Stick-slip squirmers: slip asymmetry can qualitatively change self-swimming characteristics of squirmers

چکیده

A slip asymmetry can break the fore–aft symmetry of local hydrodynamic force distribution on surface an otherwise no-slip or uniform-slip particle. Here, we use Lorentz reciprocal theorem to demonstrate that such asymmetry, even in a fractional amount, qualitatively alter swimming characteristics self-propelled spherical squirmer, markedly different from those squirmers. Unlike usual tangential squirming by thrust-providing B 1 mode and type-determining 2 mode, discover two unique features for stick-slip squirmer. First, squirmer acquire velocity U without but simply symmetric extensile/contractile which is able reverse direction Second, stresslet $\boldsymbol{\mathsf{S}}$ also be induced unidirectional capable inverting squirmer's extensile type contractile vice versa change puller pusher manner. We further show modes reinforce compete with each other enhance diminish due interplays between asymmetric forces stick faces. phase diagram established categorize variety newly emerging states, as enhanced/degraded puller/pusher backward puller/pusher, depending relative strength β = / , polarity degree disparity. As result cooperative competitive natures, swim more less efficiently than ones. These distinctive arising disparity not only made geometrically tuneable steering motion provide new means making efficient artificial microswimmers using amphiphilic Janus particles.

Squirmers with swirl: a model for Volvox swimming

Colonies of the green alga Volvox are spheres that swim through the beating of pairs of flagella on their surface somatic cells. The somatic cells themselves are mounted rigidly in a polymeric extracellular matrix, fixing the orientation of the flagella so that they beat approximately in a meridional plane, with axis of symmetry in the swimming direction, but with a roughly [Formula: see text] ...

Stabilizing stick-slip friction.

Even the most regular stick-slip frictional sliding is always stochastic, with irregularity in both the intervals between slip events and the sizes of the associated stress drops. Applying small-amplitude oscillations to the shear force, we show, experimentally and theoretically, that the stick-slip periods synchronize. We further show that this phase locking is related to the inhibition of slo...

How to distinguish between stick-slip and pure slip oscillations

Numerical simulations are performed for the stick-slip motion in the BurridgeKnopoff model of one block. Calculated amplitude increases with the driving velocity. We argue that this effect can be a criterion to distinguish between the stick-slip and pure slip oscillations. PACS : 62.20.Qp, 05.45.-a, 02.60.-x

Stick-slip singularity of the Giesekus fluid

The local asymptotic behaviour at the stick-slip singularity is determined for the Giesekus fluid in the presence of a solvent viscosity. In planar steady flow, the method of matched asymptotic expansions is used to show that it comprises a three region structure. Specifically, an outer or core region that links boundary layers at the rigid stick and free slip surfaces. In the outer region, the...
